Six Reasons to Develop Close Relationship with God

Updated: Sep 24, 2020

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand (Psalm 16:11)

We are made to live in relationships from the very beginning. God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18) so He made a woman out of the man’s ribs.

People suffer when they are isolated. Psychologist found that loneliness can cause all kinds of health problems such as high blood pressure, inflammation in body and even learning and memory problems.

When God created Adam and Eve, a triangle relationship was created that formed three foundational relationship, God to man, Adam, God to Woman, Eve and Adam to Eve, and they built the foundations of all the other relationships, human being with God, family, relatives, friends and brothers and sisters in the God’s family. The relationship between human being to God defines all relationship among human beings and close to God provides us with all benefit to live a fulfilling life in love with hope, peace, joy, harmony, strength and happiness.

1. Close relationship with God is the foundation of all healthy relationship

In the very beginning in Eden, God, Adam and Eve has an intimate and harmony relationship, there is no conflict, no chaos, no hatred but only love. Because Adam and Eve followed God’s instruction and enjoyed a life of abundant in Eden and there were no hard work but only peacefully enjoying the providence from God. However one day, Eve broke the relationship by rebelling God’s rule, eat the fruits on the tree of Knowledge and Wisdom. Ever since the relationship between God and Human beings was broken, so was the relationship between people, Adam blamed Eve; they were driven out of Eden, ever since we have to labor hard to make a living; ever since sins came into the world, there is jealousy and hatred, Cain killed his brother Abel because of envying Abel’s good deeds (Genesis 4:3-8)

When we break the relationship with God, we are away from God’s super nature guidance with pure love, we walk on our own ways that is driven with selfish desires and ambitions even lust, we start to break other relationships in family, at work and communities. The world is in the states of chaos, turbulent, frantic and ailing because of the rebelling God and his Laws. It leads to a life full of pains, anxiety, sufferings and death, the wage of sin is death (Roman 6:23)

2. Close relationship with God generates the positive influence in life

Close relationship with God generates the power of influence. And close relationship with people also generates influence. Good close relationship among people creates positive and constructive influence but bad ones create negative and destructive influence as it’s mentioned in the above that Eve negatively influenced Adam because he has close relationship with Eve. When Eve was tempted and broke God’s discipline, because of her close relationship with Adam, she easily persuaded Adam to follow her and eat the fruits on the tree of knowledge and wisdom.

However, good healthy close relationship creates positive and constructive influence and close relationship with God can always lead to positive influence. When Job was tempted by Satan, Job did not fail God because of his stronger relationship with God. Even his wife said, ‘Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!’ Job replied, ‘you are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?’ in all this, Job did not sin in what he said (Job 2:9-10). At the end, Job was greatly blessed by God and rewarded more than he had ever before.

When we have closer relationship with God, we know his words, his goodness, love, his will. When facing any trials in life, we will be able go through and stand firm, we will not fail him just as Job did not, we will win the battle in life at the end just as Job did because, if God is for us, who can against us (Roman 8:31)

Usually the quality of our human being relationship is a good mirror of our relationship with God. When we have problems with God, we also get problems with people.

3. Close relationship with God gives you energy and power

A friend of mine from previous employer contacted me before Christmas for a gathering. And both of us had a hard time to figure out a time. Finally I suggested postpone it after Christmas. However, on the appointment date, she got another urgent request and we had to cancel it but we really want to have a gathering. And the schedule was so full and we could not find one. Then I thought about it, the most important is for us to share information, why did not we have a phone call? Then we did that. During the talk, several times, she told me how crazy her work is and the demands from kids. Often times, I also hear people say, “I am so overwhelmed, I am tired all the time, I missed my appointment, I’m so stressed”, etc.

The modern technology does not bring us more free time instead we get busier and busier and more work to be done. We are human beings and need sleep and should be recharged every day just as a car needs to be filled with gas after certain nes are charged after hours. Where does our energy come from? That’s from the mightmiles, phoy God. We cannot help ourselves. Just as the bible said God gives power to those who are tired and worn out, and he offers strength to the weak.” (Isaiah 40:29). Apostle Paul also said, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13)

In order not to get tired all the time, draw close to the Lord who provides always so your energy can be renewed. When you wake up, say a Prayer, dear Lord, I need you give me power, wisdom and guidance go through the day for everything I will work on so I will not be tired at the end. Thank you!

4. Close relationship with God pleases Him

God is love (John 4:8) and he loves us so much that he gave his one and only Son, Jesus, who died for us that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16)

God loves us with passion, do you feel that? His love for us is much deeper and broader than any parents love their own kids. So many times children do not understand parents’ love and rebel against them, so do we rebel against God.

When my daughter was before eleven years old, she always loves to sleep with me and gives me hugs all the time. Whenever she gives me a hug, I hug her back with warmth and happiness. I deeply sense an intimated close relationship and love, the feeling flows through my body, warms me up and melts my heart. I become the happiest person in the world at those moments. In the same way, when we draw close to God, we greatly please Him and he gives us more. Come near to God and he will come near to you (James 4:8)

5. Close relationship with God gains a clear direction

We are living in a daily life being stressed all around, we are demanded to do countless so called important things and tempted by all kinds of desires. So many times we are lost in the business and crushed physically and spiritually. We need a clear focus and direction to do the right things that have lasting value, to participate events that are truly meaningful and leads to significant life changes, to live each day that creates positive influence. We cannot follow the world with constant changes without any standards. We need standards from God that will never change. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away (Luke 21:33) The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever (Isaiah 40:8)

When we follow God, draw close to Him, he will show us his divine plan for our life and lead me in his way and we will gain a clear direction. As it said, you make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand (Psalm 16:11)

6. Close relationship with God helps us win the battle in life

In this life, we are not only facing the struggles from human beings but also struggle from the spiritual forces of evils in darkness. As it’s said, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12)

Having a close relationship with God will strengthen us to win the battle against the dark world. The Lord, Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Having a close relationship with God also makes all other relationship right and healthy, it pleases God because we trust in Him and it will generate constructive positive influence in people’s life. May the Lord help us in developing close relationship with Him!
